Kristina Urbanas Spencer is an Allied Member of the American Society of Interior Designers and a resident of Pasadena, California. She specializes in sustainable, healthy and durable remodeling and design solutions to create living spaces that function as therapeutic environments. “Living spaces should be restorative sanctuaries created to be healthy and durable as well as beautiful,” she states.
Prior to becoming an interior designer, Spencer worked as a Registered Nurse in dialysis at a Los Angeles respiratory hospital. “I saw people receiving health care but living in environments and lifestyles that were making and keeping them sick,” she says. After taking an intermediate design class and learning about Green Design, it all came together. “I wanted to merge my love for nursing with my passion for interior design to help people regain and maintain their health—to be their best. I knew at that moment that I was created to be a Green Designer.” Spencer earned a Bachelor of Science degree and graduated with honors in Interior Design from California State University Northridge.
Spencer was a featured Green Designer in the 2007 ASID Pasadena Chapter 21st Annual Home and Kitchen Tour. In December 2007 in the “Best of Edition” of Pasadena Magazine, she was named “Guru of Green, best Green Designer” in Pasadena. Early in 2008, she was the featured designer of an episode on Greenovate, a how-to green house series, for the twenty-four hour, eco-lifestyle channel Planet Green. She was also honored in the spring issue of Innovative Home Magazine as one of the “10 Top Green Design Gurus” in ASID nationally.
The American Society of Interior Design (ASID) and US Green Building Council (USGBC) have partnered up to create the best practice residential remodeling guidelines and have targeted resources for sustainable residential improvement projects. The program is called “Regreen” and was unveiled in March 2008 at the ASID National Convention. Spencer renovated a home employing the Regreen guidelines in Pasadena, which was featured in the 2008 ASID Pasadena Chapter 22nd Annul Home and Kitchen Tour.
She is also the founding chair of the ASID Pasadena Chapter Regreen Committee. “ One of our goals is to make green, healthy resources available to interior designers,” she states. Pasadena is one of the many cities in the USA looking for residential projects to showcase.
Spencer defines her design style as, “ A clean, uncluttered, understated aesthetic… less is more.” For those of us looking to green our homes she advises, “ Take baby steps. When making a choice, make it a green and healthy one. To make it less daunting, be sure to use the professional service of an ASID Interior Designer, you’ll be glad you did.”
